Is it our turn again Tuesday Night

The Knicks have about a 7% chance to win a the rights to Derrick Rose, the coveted #1 pick in this years NBA draft. Since the Knicks season ended in January, this particular Tuesday has been longed for by me for sometime. Its the most exciting night of this Knicks season. Thinking about it, the NBA needs the Knicks back, and much like David Stern rigged the 85 draft for us, I think we have a shot at the #1 (more than 7%). Isiah is gone, though still on the payroll ( i hear he is in "europe"), Walsh and D'antoni are here to run the show, good things are on tap for the Knicks, and with Rose, it makes this turnaround thing go that much faster...we're new yorkers, we don't wait .....

anyway, I am so bored with theses damn San Antonio Spurs, how much more fun would a Hollywood vs. N'awlins series be.....whateva...

It sounds great...actually it sounds fantastic...but, hey I can't say that thought doesn't live in the back of my head...

Interesting news, out of the suddenly, and I think temporarily, resurgent Knicks. Rumors have begun to swirl that Patrick Ewing, may be on his way back into town to work with Eddy and Zach. At todays press conference at the Knicks practice facility, Isiah was asked the following:

Isiah, how close have you guys come to bringing Patrick back to work with your big men? Patrick Ewing?

Isiah froze a second, totally blindsided by a question he had already faced twice before earlier in the season. But Marchand's sneak attack, he says, was motivated by the discussion on his station earlier that day, when hosts and callers wondered aloud why Patrick Ewing wasn't around to work with the likes of Eddy Curry, Zach Randolph and Randolph Morris.

While this "ride" was going on, I was watching the Giants embarrass the Cowboys, en route to the NFC Championship. Although I kept my pants on, the game was incredible, and though I am not a Giants fan persay, I do love seeing "Americas" Team take a dive, and especially, watching their star player being reduced to tears after the game. Poor T.O., the cockiest player in the league....can't stand losing...what a shocker....

Back in 2000, I actually spent a small amount of time caring about the race for president, notably the democratic primary. Why, because, none other then Bill Bradley, was running and almost beating Al Gore in the race for the democratic nomination. Bradley, as Clyde knows, was part of two championship basketball teams, KNICKS, championship basketball teams. Not only that he was brilliant, a rhodes scholar, princeton grad, senator from NJ for about 20 years and oh yea a member of the NBA Hall of Fame.

Seriously though, I liked this guy, and it was after Gore beat him, and it was Gore Vs Bush, that I had no other choice but then to vote for crazzzzzy Ralph Nader. I was tired of politics as usual, and how terribly lame Gore and Bush were (and yes, Gore was lame, don't pretend now because he's all Mr. Green Nobel Prize that he wasn't a talking robot stiff in 2000 ). I have pretty much felt the same since...only getting into the 04 election because I had to support anyone but Bush (aka John Kerry).

So why do I bring up Bill Bradley, because, if there is a politician I trust in this world, and there are so few, he is one of them. Hell, I read his biography at some point, and enjoyed it. Topping that, I at one point went to a meeting of Democrats for Bradley...the mere fact that I almost got involved in a political campaign, says a lot...(mostly that I am lazy and unpassionate)..it says, that I was ready to almost spend my time helping out...maybe.

On Sunday, Bill Bradley, gave his support to Senator Barack Obama, and that brings me closer to thinking that Mr. Obama, just might be the real deal. Yes, I have heard all the hype, read the articles, and watched way too much cable news, I know whats going on with Obama and I am far from the first on his bandwagon. However, its like a trustworthy friend confirming what you expected...thanks Bill Bradley.

They always save some of the best flicks for the end of the year ....of which I was able to catch three this holiday weekend...

Juno - fantastic, loved everything about this movie, extremely well written , great characters, hysterically funny, and a solid, engaging story. It hits on all points. Ellen Page (Juno)blew my mind.

Kite Runner - Usually book adaptations suck, and this one did not, about as good as they could have possibly done. Highly enjoyable....

Rescue Dawn - (not new, but came out earlier this year) - In a movie produced by Clipper Center - Elton Brand, this is a true story of a POW stuck in Laos and his incredible survival story. Christian Bale, again delivers, that guy can flat out get into a role.

and musically speaking....

three albums also came into view over the past few days (thank you itunes gift card) ....I chose wisely....they are all very good.

The new Band of Horses CD - "Cease to Begin" - brilliant, we featured Band of Horses a few months ago, and then I just slacked on buying the new album. Its all over many top albums of the year lists, and is well deserved to be. Don't you love when a band follows up their debut and delivers as they should (even surprises), yea me too

Anyway, charity is my topic of the day, as I just came across something cool. So these former hedge fund kids, decided to get away from their life of greed, and instead focus themselves on doing good full time. They came up with an idea to research charities, and then let us know which ones are truly most effective, and truly doing the most good. They research these charity organizations much like they would a hedge fund investment. If you are like me you want to know whats up with your hard earned money when you give it away. So thanks to these guys, you can stop thinking about that, and research those groups and take suggestions from their site. I love this idea. These two were featured in the New York Times, their site is call GiveWell.net. Check it out, and instead of handing out brownies all day long, maybe you could save that money and give it away to someone who is actually hungry.

So I admit when it comes to pop culture I know zero, however, I learned something today. There is a song, quite popular, which nominated for a Grammy, and is a song probably played at Bar Mitzvahs/Sweet 16s/High School Proms, and Strip Clubs, all across the land, and its just so wrong, that only in America, can it be deemed artistic, and praiseworthy. Comedian David Cross, sums it up this, way, in his top 10 of 2007:

For my third night of Hanukkah I'll be checking out the Hasidic Reggae Stylings of one Matisyahu. Matis, is cool, though I have my issues with him. In any event his shows are fun, and tonights show at the Warsaw promises to be fun...I like fun.

Lettuce is BACK - the funky funky outfit known as Lettuce is getting back together for one show on 2/29. The group consists of Eric Krasno (Soulive), Adam Deitch (John Scofield, Wyclef Jean), Sam Kininger (Soulive Horns), Ryan Zoidis (Rustic Overtones), Adam Smirnoff (Robert Randolph) and Erik Coomes (DJ Quick). Also joining in for the performance at New York City's Sullivan Hall (they have renovated and re-named Lions Den) on February 29 will be Krasno's Soulive bandmate, Neal Evans. Sweeeeeeet!

I never thought subway advertising would actually propel me to do anything.

Nimrod Nation is a new documentary on Sundance Channel. It was advertised in a many a subway station over the past few months. Its a show which follows the life of a High School Basketball team in Northern Michigan, in an area called the Upper Peninsula. Though the basis of the show is this relatively successful basketball team, its about life in a place you have never heard of, where after basketball they hunt, fish, and live life in a freezing cold small town, where their world is just a microcosm of ours. Seriously its good enough to be worth blogging about especially in a landscape of really bad reality tv, this is actual reality, and its completely worthwhile.

Other Notes:

Zep and Metallica at Bonnaroo....?? Could it be....and if so...I have one prediction, this will be the last Bonnaroo. It sounds exciting on the surface, but I think this one gets out of control.

Have you watched any Vice TV yet? Another thing I have discovered lately...just a ton of really interesting things to watch via the internet, that aren't porn. I've been digging the news content, but there is a ton of quality stuff to check out. Regular TV is lame in comparison....

Ok, so Knicks basketball season is just a mere 48 hours away, and I can't sleep. What can we expect from this years team. After the last few seasons, and the wackiest off season in team history, does anyone really know? Most critics and prognosticators have us as a high 30's low 40's win team.

As for I, Brad Evans, I am a blogger of optimism, at least when it comes to the Knicks. So here are a variety of Knicks predictions for the new season:

First and foremost, the key to this season is patience on behalf of the fans, it could be bumpy at the start
Zach Randolph will have a better season then Eddy Curry and they will never truly coexist in the paint
Isiah will not be fired, but Stern, instead of just talking, might put the clamp down on James Dolan (and lets hope so)
Jamal Crawford will have an All Star season (ignore his preseason stats)
Renaldo Balkman and David Lee will continue to be everyones (my) favorite players
Nate Robinson will win comeback player of the year - potentially replacing Steph at point at some point
Q Rich, will have incredible games and continue to be a team leader, but more than likely will be injured more than active
The Knicks city dancers will continue to be glorified strippers
The Knicks will be a fun team to watch, if not for the dramatic soap opera that is their front office and point guard, then for their play. There will ups and downs, but at the end of the day this team was making the playoffs last year until Jamal and DLee got hurt. Add Zach Randolph, an improved Balkman, Lee and Robinson, a stronger J Craw, a weirder, yet still somewhat effective Stephon and I am looking at 42+ wins, and 5-7 seed in the playoffs. As I assume we will be streaky, no one will want to face us in the first round, so look for the Knicks to upset one team, and make it all the way to the Eastern Conference Semi's, where they will lose to the Pistons in 6 games.

Jeter is single again!

The Hank Steinbrenner Era has begun, and so far he has done exactly what most Yankee fans have wanted. I'll miss Joe Torre, A-Rod thank goodness they did not make a mistake resigning him for $30M per and I love the Joe Girardi call. As for Mattingly not getting the job, I can't say he deserved it over Girardi, plus, we need a manager with a little bit of fire, which Donnie could not bring to the table, nor could he bring a "Manager of the Year" award. He needs to get over it

Losing Torre is sad, and they went about letting him go in a very inappropriate fashion, however, he had to go. As for A-Rod, I just read a giant article about Scott Boras in last weeks New Yorker, and I like A-Rod even less because of Boras, who in my opinion is the epitome of what is wrong in professional sports. Very curious to know which team is going to give A-Rod $300M over the next 10 years.

Where will the Yankees spend their giant savings? A #1 starter? Resigning Posada and Rivera? Mike Lowell? All of the above? Should be an interesting hot stove season.....

The Knicks are BACK - I am going all NBA and only NBA for the next few days leading up to Friday's opener. And by only NBA I mean, only the New York Knickerbockers....

For years, I have been clamoring (i love that word) for more bowling in the city, and I have often said the best place for it would be Williamsburg. Well, in addition to the eventuality that is Rock and Bowl, another entrepreneur has taken my ideas, so check this place out..... Brought to you by the same owners as Barcade, another great venue. damn these guys are smart.....hoping the next thing they do is some sort of drinking meets batting cages/mini golf venue....

Why Williamsburg, because, hipsters pride themselves on doing the traditionally uncool thing, they love the irony of it all, so bowling and Williamsburg are like peas and carrots. With that said, the truth is bowling is the best sport in the world, and I cannot wait to drink cheap beer and bowl a few games.

General Ricardo Sanchez, who commanded coalition forces in Iraq after the invasion, is now speaking out against Washington's policies. Uh oh - here we go again, another gung ho, "everything in Iraq is awesome" General, when under Bush and Cheney control, is now calling the Iraq war a "Nightmare with no end in sight!" - wow that makes me feel comfortable. Only 2 weeks to go till it counts:

In a first test against the Boston Celtics, our beloved Knicks, really gave it their all and it just was not enough. The lost 101 to 61, hell of an effort, but it just did not work out. Thankfully its only the pre-season. I sense Boston fans getting all giddy with Garnett, Pierce and Allen, and thats cool, but lets see how this all plays out, when it matters. Are you scared .....I am not....

Speaking of Sports, my alma mater, the University at Buffalo (3-4) is headed to play Syracuse (1-6) this weekend in the Carrier Dome. For the first time, in any contest versus 'Cuse, I can legitimately say that I think UB will take this one. How the mighty Syracuse has fallen ....McNabb, Graves...where have you gone....

So, 6 years ago today, we all know the story. It changed us all forever....and I was thinking about this day on my way into the city this morning, as the Q train rolled over the Manhattan bridge, and one is able to gaze in the direction of where the towers once stood. I thought, you know what, I think I am sadder for our country than I was 6 years ago, this very day. What a sad thought, a day in which 3,000 innocent victims were killed in an instant because of one massive cowardly attack of terrorism, 6 years ago, and yet I am sadder today than I was then? Could that even be possible?? This one tragic event has spread like a disease, and its seemingly incurable. Wars (yes two of them, and they are never ending), Corruption, Scandal, Billions of Dollars Wasted, Lies, Cheating, Phish broke up, Spinning, Fear, and worst of all the continuous Exploitation (for various gain) of the actual event itself. Sick enough yet.....or do you just ignore it, like most of us do (including me). So many of us our unbelievably embarrassed by our country, its leaders and its actions, we can't even talk about it anymore without our blood boiling. So we don't talk about it.....preferring to focus on an election over a year away, hoping and praying for a change, a change we can't define, and one I don't really believe in.

Negativity sucks, and its not something I prefer to talk about....but on this day, I encourage everyone to think about both what happened 6 years ago, and what has happened since....try not to get angry, and write to me if you can find something positive that you can share about the America post 9/11

In the meantime, a new year is upon my people, yes Rosh Hashana (translates, head of the year). Its a new beginning for the whole world. An opportunity to start over....what a great concept. So make the holiday personal, this is your chance, and look back see where and with what you went wrong this past year, where did you grow. Build on growth, and figure out a way of avoiding the pitfalls of the past. Come up with ideas that help us not go down the paths we’ve gone on, but do lead us down the road to perfection. Don't just plan or hope for a better year, do something about it. Building on your growth and fixing your shortcomings and all this through concrete actions that will eventually lead us all to going higher and becoming bigger than we are today. Its about you, your family, and your community, and with that mindset, all of this other stuff as I wrote above will take care of itself, in its own way....and with that I wish all of my readers a sweet, joyous new year.

From Wetlands Preserve to Brooklyn Bowl

As yesterday's New York Times indicated, former Wetlands Preserve owner Peter Shapiro is in the final stages of opening a new music venue. This club will come with a twist, however, as it also will be a high-tech bowling alley. Shapiro is partnering with Charley Ryan, the former General Manager at Wetlands to create Brooklyn Bowl, which will open in the spring of next year in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn. Shapiro explains that one of the notable aspects of the 20,000 foot space is that "the people at the bowling lanes will have the best view of the stage. The bowler's lounge is essentially one big VIP section."

Shapiro goes on to explain, ""I was patient when thinking of a new venue to follow Wetlands. I wanted to find the right thing, something that had the spirit of Wetlands but was different. I am very excited about Brooklyn Bowl because it truly is going to be different than anything other bowling alley or music venue. It took five years to find the right space (an old Iron Works Factory from the 19th Century), but I found it."

Eddie and Dave - These two really don't like each other persay, but they do like money

Finally, everyone has gotten over how weird David Lee Roth is, and a "reunited" Van Halen, will tour extensively this Fall. Growing up , I was a big VH fan, and part of me still is, and I NEVER thought Van Halen was anywhere near the band they were without David Lee Roth. In fact Van Halen, post Roth, sucked, with the exception of a handful of tunes, all written on the next album or so after Roth left. Does that mean I will be seeing them when they come to MSG this Fall....doubtful, but I am tempted.

Speaking of concerts on the complete other end of the musical spectrum, Sufjan Stevens, is playing the Brooklyn Academy of Music, of Nov 1st through the 3rd. Its a multimedia performance, entitled "The BQE". Read about it through the link, seems very interesting and probably will be something I will attend.....except its all sold out, and that is weak.

Red Hook Brooklyn is home to some seriously good food, provided by the local diverse hispanic community, every summer weekend at the Red Hook Ballfields. It is homeade, real and delicious, yet the city of new york does not see it that way. They see healthcode violations and a chance to make money off people who cannot afford to pay. I may not truly believe that there will ever be peace between Palestinians and Israeli's, but I do hold out for any glimmer of hope which might make even the smallest difference. I present to you: Surfing for Peace in Gaza. Prior to Israeli disenagement from Gaza, there was also a small Israeli surfing contingent in Gaza as well. And its funny how, to support the Palestinian surfers in Gaza, it required a Jewish Doctor from Hawaii....not any Arab "brothers" from any other neighboring country.......but whatever its all good...

Michael Vicks career - shut down or ......

My thoughts on Michael Vick - within 5 years he will be in an NFL training camp.....how quickly we will forget. We are a world that has complete amensia, hell I barely remember what happened an hour ago. Vick's gonna come out of the pen, in that crazy I just worked out in jail for the past few years, kinda shape....should be good times....

So - Vick will be on the Raiders in 2011 or something like that......

BUT - the issue does not go away so easily, Vick got caught but dog fighting is not just happening in his mansions backyard.....so my solution is this, we hate to see dogs killed, but we love to eat chicken. So ......I say, lets make cockfighting way more accessible, its already huge in many Latin American countries. Yeah, maybe two chickens fighting in a coop, is not as exciting as two pit bulls biting each others faces off....but...if its blood you seek....and food you want. Hell you ain't eatin' the dogs

Standing in an empty pool, with thousands for the Beastie Boy's first ever show in Brooklyn. The McCarren Pool, is a great venue, mostly because it has a good free for all strategy. Hoard the masses in through one entrance, and then let them do as they please. I really enjoyed that. The only thing they need to figure out is how to alleviate massive beer lines. Then again you are in Williamsburg and the pre and post game bar options are unlimited....

As for the show, it was great, just the amount of energy and fun you'd expect from the Beasties....in Brooklyn, with a fun "No Sleep Til....." to end the show on a high note. Its weird to see guys who are 40+ jump around like they were 16 again, but its all part of the show, and Ad Roc, Mike D and MCA always bring it. Its part novelty, part rock/funk show, part pure entertainment. Good times.....

hot enough to walk naked in the streets of NYC.....or just get the hell out of town

And all 5.5 of you must have missed me so....

This morning, a morning I will remember at least until next week, as I woke up to a the sound of intense thunder and lighting. Waking up in the eye of the storm was not so great, then the rains stopped and the intense humidity set in. Getting outside to realize all subway trains were flooded and were not running into Manhattan. What a start....the masses of people all walking to nowhere, dripping with sweat as the sun beat on our necks. For a second it felt like Katrina, as the people all set their eyes on Atlantic Center....the transit hub of Brooklyn...only to realize nothing was going on there either and the MTA was nowhere to be found. Reminded me of the scene at the Superdome. Eventually, drenched with sweat and confused at the cheos of downtown brooklyn, I retired to my home, for a bagel and quality time with my air conditioner and eventually went to work at some point.

Changing topics, THE BUDOS BAND, is the funkiest fuckin band out there right now, and there 2nd album, conveniently titled, The Budos Band II, is out in stores now. When I say funky, I mean down, dirty, afro-funk, every song makes you move and say "damn, this is the shit" kinda funky. Buy the album, don't steal it...these guys could use the cash. Better yet, see them live, as I did last night at Sound Fix Records in Williamsburg.

just another day in the city

I like listen to music at work, merely to drown out the people around me. The incessant buzz of inane office chatter can often be disturbing to my agenda of not doing anything.

Kevin Garnett is now a Boston Celtic, which is cool for me a Knicks fan, because we get to watch him play more often. Does it scare me as a Knicks fan, that one of the best players in the league is now in our division? Nah....yea its cool that they have Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and KG...but what else? There is no depth in Boston after these three, plus these guys are all on their downside. If this was 5 years ago, this would have been an unbelievable trade. Will the C's be much improved...they better be, but nothing earth shattering...it's not like the Spurs are all of the sudden in the East. Don't even get me started on the Kevin Mchale/Danny Ainge relationship that made this lopsided trade even happen.

I am so bored with baseball lately...and the fact that everytime A-Rod comes to the plate, and they have to change the ball (gotta make sure we know its officially #500) is absolutley insane.

I am I the only one, or does the current political discourse in this country make you ill as well. Yea, I get it, we all want GWB outta Washington, but face reality man, he is there for the next 18 months. Meanwhile the candidates are trolling the nation, debating, sniping at each other, back stabbing for votes, the "campaign" is in full swing. We are going to deal with this until November 2008, a year and half from now. All told this is a 2 year campaign. How much can you take, how disinterested will we be come election day? And on top of it not one of the current candidates excites me all that much. The world is in an extermely precarious state right now, and no one wants to tell the truth, no one wants to face facts, I hear calls for change, but is anyone really ready to change? Am I depressed, nah....Am I completely apathetic to the whole experience, ofcourse.

Anyway....its almost time for my weekly vacation, called the weekend....the only solace to my cubicle existence. Go see the Simpsons Movie....laugh a little....its good for you

Back in the 80's there used to be a music scene, better known as "the music you hear on college radio", now college radio is better termed as indy rock, and the word hipster means nothing anymore because, if you are a hipster you're not cool, even though you are a hipster its just that calling people hipsters has been deemed uncool. I think me writing about hipsters is super uncool (at least some might say), but than again Clyde is still cool, and he has always been hip. So anyway, I just learned that we can attribute this whole indy rock craze, and the hipster/non hipster world we live in to the 80's college radio scene for it spawned places like Williamsburg and websites like Pitchfork etc etc.. Specifically 10 80's rock albums, which can be found here.

shut up Ted!

In news that will blow your mind....there will be a Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure III, starring neither the orginal Bill or Ted. The agent for superstar Keanu Reeves believes that although the actor is interested, it would ruin his career. Huh, ruin??, is that a little much, did not the character of Ted, "Theodore" Logan, make Keanu into the incredible tour de force he is today? Please discuss...

Taking a more serious note, I had the chance to see a screening of an incredible new documentry, called, "Unsettled", and all I can say is that I highly encourage everyone to see it. Its all about Israel's pullout from the Gaza Strip, with first hand footage from various points (those of an assortment of twentysomethings) of view. Check out the trailer here..and stay tuned to the website for further screening information. As well I will try to post it here...

Back in NYC.....

So Israel was amazing as always...great weather, good times, good friends. The country is incredible, and I renew my hope for everyone to make it there someday. And if you have already been, I encourage you to go again and again. Also send some positive vibes for peace as well....trust me it won't hurt.

Home again and back to the grind, though still feeling energized from the holyland. Thus, I made a bigtime positive switch from bagels with cream cheese, to eating PB&J for breakfast (note: weekdays only!). I know its about the protein, but it really feels like I am doing something wrong. How can something that tastes like candy be good for you at 9AM?

Tonight ....I fly ...

WWCD will be on summer vacation as I depart the country for 10 days, starting tonight. I am going to what might be the most talked about, yet smallest country on earth. A place everyone should visit at least once, if not more often, a place important to many of us for many reasons, and a place where the falafel and hummus flow like wine, thats right Israel. I figured what better way to celebrate Hama's victory in the Gaza then to go celebrate as close as I can go without getting brutally murdered. Seriously though, I'll be fine.....in fact I will be there for the very first pitch. (and by the way that game will be televised in NYC)

This may come as a surprise to some, but really over the past few years, Stephon Marbury, has done some pretty incredible things off the court (and occasionally on the court). In a world of spoiled overpaid athletes, it seems, that Marbury gets "it". It seems like he has realized, that he has more money then he could possibly need, and thus, is giving alot of it back. Here is a blurb from the NY Post's Knick beat writer Marc Berman, about the charitable Marbury.

Between the excellent half hour of tv which is Stars on Stars, and all of the good off the court stuff, the affordable Starbury sneaker.....the changed Stephon Marbury is becoming one of my favorite NY athletes.

Meanwhile, Kobe wants out of LA, and his short list includes...only three teams, one of which is ofcourse the NY Knicks (who are his first choice).....Kobe in NYC.....good for the Knicks, great for the NBA.....

I just scored some tix to see the Beastie Boys at McCarren Pool in the WillyB. McCarren looks to be one of the cooler venues I have seen music in, check out some pics here. However on the same day, is the Black Crowes at Summerstage and The Hold Steady at Celebrate Brooklyn. Tough choices, but only one of these bands defines NY, and better yet defines Brooklyn...leaning Beasties here.

Anyway, more music, as the Bonnarroo Music Fest is underway, the NY times will be blogging the fest all weekend, check that out. If someone could jet me up out there right now I'd appreciate that, give me a ring.

It was a nearly 10 year love affair, your crazy Italian mobster ways, always entertaining me for one hour every Sunday. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and truly your final moment with me, was outstanding. Despite what the "critics" are saying, they are all wrong, you my friend were brilliant and truly delivered the goods in a very funny yet, dramatic last hour. You even played our favorite Journey song on your way out.....for that I thank you and wish you well.
